Do Your Summer Travel NOW--or In September - Shel Horowitz's Monthly Frugal Fun Tip

Do Your Summer Travel NOW--or In September

If your schedule allows it, take your vacation just before or after the peak season. In much of the Northern Hemisphere, the most crowded times to travel are July and August. By going a little early or a little late, you'll find

  • A warmer welcome from locals who are not crushed in a throng of tourists
  • Lower airfare, car rental, and lodging prices
  • Much less headache and more choice getting accommodations
  • The ability to see more of what you came to see
  • In most cases, a climate that isn't much different from the most crowded times
  • Pre- or post-season clearance sales on souvenirs

It's likely to be even cheaper and less crowded if you go waaaaay off season--but then you may face closed attractions and rotten weather. So go when you can still have a good time, but save, in some cases, as much as 50% on lodging and transportation, 30% on food.
