Shel Horowitz's Monthly Frugal Fun Tip for March, 2005

I'm betting that 98 percent of you can get to a local college or university reasonably easily. And if you live in many parts of the country, there may be a dozen or more colleges accessible to you.

Colleges are second only to libraries in their appeal to the Frugal Fun enthusiast. And most colleges publish a calendar of events, both in print and online. Get on the list and/or bookmark the page for the events listing of any college near you. Also watch the calendars for local newspapers, etc.

Of course, the big-name concerts and such get plenty of publicity--but I've spent many enjoyable afternoons and evenings enjoying such (usually free or very low-cost) events as...

* Faculty and senior music or dance recitals
* College theater productions (or rehearsals)
* Talks by visiting speakers
* Poetry readings
* Sports practice sessions
* Guided museum tours
* Film and video showings
* Faculty and senior art openings
