Featured Exhibit: Chaotic Metamorphosis

Proje4L / Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates Istanbul European Capital of Culture 2010 with an exhibition opening on April 29th, 2010 .

Elgiz Museum is proud to honor this historical occasion and contribute to Istanbul's soaring cultural scene with a special exhibition; "Chaotic Metamorphosis", curated by Burcu Pelvanoglu.

The description of Istanbul as the capital of culture is most commonly associated with its cultural heritage from the Byzantine and Ottoman past. Particularly in visual arts and architecture, the primary images that spring to mind are that of ramparts, cisterns, palaces, domes, minarets, calligraphy and miniatures. Elgiz Museum complements 2010 cultural happenings that highlight city's historical charm with a youthful look. The local artistic developments of the day are presented through the perspective of Burcu Pelvanoglu, a young curator in "Chaotic Metamorphosis." As a starting point, Pelvanoglu takes the "chaos" in Maslak, the financial district of Istanbul where the museum is located. The energy that permeates from the contemporary art museum to the combination of high rise buildings, squatter houses and universities is used to contextualize the ongoing transformations in Istanbul cityscape and Turkish contemporary art. The inevitable interplay and causality between these simultaneous transformations are explored in the exhibition via works by Can Aytekin, Elif Celebi, Cinar Eslek, Murat Germen, Genco Gulan, Gozde Ilkin, Bahar Oganer, Irfan Onurmen, Ferhat Ozgur and Ekin Saclioglu. The viewers will get a chance to see a wide range of media including painting, photography, installation and video in the mezzanine, atrium and courtyard of the museum. "Chaotic Metamorphosis" will be on view between 29 April - 04 September, 2010 .

In the main hall of the museum, a selection from the Elgiz Collection with works of established and emerging Turkish and international artists will also be on view throughout 2010 .
